POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AT THE
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
1. Organization
The current Postgraduate Studies Programme (PSP) has been established in 1994. The programme offers the following degrees by course and research:
Specialization Diploma (Sp.D.) [equivalent to the degree of Master of Science of British and American Universities]. The following fields of specialization are offered:
- Polymer Technology
- Surface Finishing / Paint Technology
- Oenology (wine science)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry
2. Admission Prerequisites and Criteria of selection
a. Graduates with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Natural Sciences (Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, Geology etc.), Health Sciences (Medicine, Pharmacy) and Agriculture from Greek or foreign Universities are accepted to the PSP.
b. Candidates must be fluent in, at least, one foreign language (particularly English). Foreign students must also learn Greek, since all courses are offered in Greek language. The University of Athens offers intensive courses in Greek language for foreign students.
c. The following criteria are also considered for admission to PSP
d. All applications must be submitted to the Department of Chemistry during the second half of September.

3. Postgraduate courses
Attendance of all courses (3 hours/week) is obligatory. At least 2 years of courses and research are required for receiving Sp.D. and two more years (total 4 years) for Ph.D.
Students must attend and successfully participate at the final examination of at least 2 for the Sp.D. and 4 for the Ph.D. out of the 5 obligatory postgraduate courses offered. Each student must also attend and successfully participate at the final examination of a given number of elective courses. Students must carry out research, submit their Thesis and present it orally and in public.
