1.    Vergina Star Copolymers

Our Department proudly announces the Synthesis of Model 16-Miktoarm Star Copolymers of the A8B8 Type (A: Polyisoprene Chain, B: Polystyrene Chain) by Professor's N. Hadjichristidis' Polymers Research Group. This polymer was named "Vergina Star" because of its similarity to the 16-rayed star found by the late Professor M. Andronikos, in the ancient tomb of the Greek King Philippos of Macedonia, in Vergina, a location in Northern Greece close to Thessaloniki.

2.    Platelet activating factor and atherosclerosis

Platelet activating factor - a molecular link between atherosclerosis theories

In the November 2003 issue of the scientific journal "European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology" - which is the official journal of the European Federation of Lipids - a novel theory for the initiation of atheromatosis (atherogenesis) and a biochemical explanation of the protective role of the Mediterranean Diet against cardiovascular diseases has been published by Greek scientists, as the main article.

Στο τεύχος του Νοεμβρίου 2003, του διεθνούς κύρους επιστημονικού περιοδικού European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology - που είναι το επίσημο όργανο της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιστημονικής Εταιρείας των Λιποειδών - δημοσιεύθηκε σαν κύριο θέμα με αναφορά στο εξώφυλλο μια παγκοσμίως νέα θεωρία Ελλήνων επιστημόνων για τον τρόπο σχηματισμού των αθηρωματικών πλακών (αθηρογένεση) και τη βιοχημική εξήγηση της προστατευτικής δράσης που ασκεί η Μεσογειακή δίαιτα έναντι των καρδιοπαθειών.
